Things To Do In & Around Johnshaven
The nearest course is Montrose Golf Club and is the 5th oldest golf course in world and boasts two 18 hole links courses and is only a 20 minute drive away. It is a public club which means it is very easy to just pay and play. The Broomfield course is ideal for families, beginners and juniors or indeed as practice for the beautifully maintained Medal course. Carnoustie, once considered one of the hardest courses' in the world after the 1999 British Open, is about a 30 to 40 min drive away and there are many other friendly courses in the surrounding area.
The nearby river North Esk is famous for its tremendously prolific salmon runs between the 16th of Feb until the 31st of October season. Click here for helpful information on permits and rods on the river.
Bird Watching & Nature
The Nature Reserve at St Cyrus and the Montrose Basin nearby both have excellent facilities for those interested in birdwatching and nature.
Places to visit
The nearby village of Gordoun also still has a working harbour complete with mounds of lobster pots, narrow streets lined with characterful buildings and fantastic sea views. You can pick up fresh fish, lobster, mussels and other seafood at the shop on the harbour wall. Alternatively you can get great fish and chips with a lovely harbour view at the Hornblower.
Further north is picturesque Catterline which is perched on top of cliffs overlooking a tiny harbour and rocky seashore. It boasts an award winning seafood restaurant' ‘The Creel'’, and has fantastic rock pools to paddle in and explore at the foot of the cliffs.
Travelling south of Johnshaven takes you to St Cyrus with its great expanse of beautiful beach which is surrounded by the cliffs of the nature reserve. A lovely spot for a stroll on the beach or explore the reserve.
House of Dun, Glamis Castle, Dunninald House and Gardens are just some of the large historical buildings near Johnshaven. Dunnottar Castle at Stonehaven is also well worth a visit with a fascinating history and includes a lions den. The lions, however, are long gone!
Stonehaven is a lovely tourist destination, in its self with a pretty harbour lined with tempting pubs and restaurants. There is plenty to see and do for all ages including the 70 year old heated Outdoor Pool and well equipped play park for the kids.
Charlton farm is a fantastic spot for all the family with 2 large play areas for different age groups with a great selection of things to play on/with. Also there is ‘pick your own’ strawberries and raspberries etc. and a lovely café for great food and refreshments. It is located a few miles north of Montrose.
Seafront Splash at the beach in Montrose. It is a modern purpose built play area with paddling pool and pitch and putt.
Stonehaven Open Air Pool is a heated olympic sized sea water pool at the beach in Stonehaven and is open in the summer months. There is a water slide, midnight swims and ‘swoopee’ sessions at weekends.
